Derby United is proud to be the only dedicated San Diego roller derby facility and we are proud to offer multiple leagues on both the banked and flat track: RDCL (all banked competitive), WTFDA (SoCal Derby women’s flat competitive), MRDA (Aftershocks open gender flat competitive) and JRDA (Tremors youth flat competitive)
Roller Derby practices are currently open to all skaters of all genders, age 13 and over for most programs. We are not yet able to offer a youth program below 12 but we do anticipate its return in the near future.
Roller Derby 101 – Attendees must attend and/or be passed out of Learn/Return to Skate Instructed Class. Open to skaters of any gender 13+. This practice focuses on skate skills needed for derby ie. Plows, T-stops, toe stops, transitions, agility, stride and more. Full gear required: helmet, elbow and knees pads and wrist guards.
Derby Fundamentals 151 – Attendees must attend and/or be passed out of Roller Derby 101. Open to skaters of any gender 13+. This practice focuses on derby and contact skills needed for understand and to play the game ie. Taking hits, Receiving contact, rules of the game, basic strategies. Full gear required.
Return to Derby 201 – Attendees must have been a bouting level roller derby player or passed MSRs for any roller derby league. Open to skaters of any gender 13+. This practice focuses on skate skills, strength and fitness level needed for skaters to safely return to full contact roller derby. Full gear required.
SoCal Derby – Attendees must have current WFTDA insurance. Open to women and non-binary skaters 18 and over.
CalSquad – Open gender program for skaters 13+. Intended for skaters who have been playing roller derby for at least 2 years.
We have programs that train on both surfaces. When you start attending Derby 101 practices, you will be able to practice your skills on the banked and flat track so that you can play for multiple programs at Derby United.
All roller derby programs require use of quad roller skates, helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards. Mouth guards are required for contact.
Rental skates are available at no extra charge and rental protective gear is available for $5 per practice.
